Assistant or Associate Professor of Chinese

 

The Department of Languages and Culture Studies of the University of North Carolina Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position to direct its Chinese language program. The appointment will begin on August 15, 2009.

 

Candidates are required to have: a Ph.D. in Chinese language pedagogy, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, Chinese studies, or a related field; native or near-native fluency in Mandarin and English; a strong research program, appropriate to rank; and be able to provide evidence of ability to teach Mandarin. The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the U.S. at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin. Responsibilities include teaching all levels of Chinese language classes (two courses per semester), developing the Chinese language program as director, and contributing to the department through research and publications.

 

The University of North Carolina Charlotte is a doctoral-granting, research-intensive university, notable for its strong academic programs and emphasis on cutting edge interdisciplinary research and teaching, and located in one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs to over 23,000 students from diverse backgrounds. The department currently offers Chinese through the fifth semester for students majoring in International Studies, Religious Studies, History, Communications, and other university programs. The department is also seeking to develop a minor, and eventually a major.
