Harvard University
The Department of East Asian
Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University anticipates one or more
openings for a full-time Drill Instructor/Teaching Assistant in Chinese
beginning August 1, 2012 through July 31, 2013. Drill instructors assist course
heads in Chinese language classes, assist in preparation of teaching materials,
and teach individual drill sections. Candidates must have native or near-native
fluency in Chinese. A bachelor's degree is required; teaching experience in
Chinese at the college level is strongly desired; computer literacy is
required.

Monterey Language Academy
Language Directors are part of a
community that creates an intensive four-week immersion program for middle and
high school students each summer. Located on selected college campuses, MMLA
offers students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French,
German, or Spanish with skilled language educators. The Language Director is a
senior administrator that works in close consultation with the Director of
Curriculum and Instruction, Region Manager and Summer Site Manager to implement
the MMLA curriculum, guidelines, and policies. The Language Director leads a
team of experienced educators and residential advisors to create a unique
immersion academic program. The Language Director will report to the Regional
Manager in pre-season and to the Summer Site Manager during the program.
The Language Director is responsible
for coaching his/her team of teachers pre- and during-season to implement the MMLA Immersion
Curriculum and to monitor both teacher and student performance. He/she is
proactive and is able to solve problems professionally, with the goal of
maintaining a successful summer language program. The Language Director ensures
that their language team is following all MMLA policies and guidelines.
Pre-season areas of responsibilities
include:
1. Acting as the master teacher to coach teachers on the MMLA
Immersion Curriculum
2. Assist in recruiting students
3. Assist in interviewing
4. Plan academy events
5. Monitor academy budget
During-program areas of
responsibilities include:
1. Work in close cooperation with Assistant Language Director
and other site administrators to ensure success of all aspects of the academy
2. Provide hands-on coaching to teaching staff to implement the
MMLA Immersion Curriculum
3. Solidify plans for and execute academy events
4. Monitor academy budget
5. Complete post-program evaluations and site reports
Qualifications:
A minimum of two years of world
language teaching experience at the secondary level required. Mastery of target
language and cultures and educator with administrative and leadership
experience preferred. Well-versed in current world language
pedagogy. Teacher training and professional development experience
strongly preferred. This is a residential position. All employees will be
provided room and board. They will have scheduled time off each day and week,
two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel
to and from program locations. Housing is not provided for family members.

Part-time Teacher of Mandarin
Bancroft School is seeking a Mandarin
teacher for a part-time position beginning in September 2012. The position will
involve teaching Mandarin at the Middle School and Upper School levels. It is
likely that this position will expand to full-time
within two years. The ideal candidate will be a native speaker or one who has
studied and travelled in China. A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a Master’s
Degree an added plus. Experience teaching in the United States, versatility and

IS A SPECIALIST IN CHINESE LITERATURE OR CULTUREbeginning
September 2012. This position is interdisciplinary,
with primary teaching responsibilities in Chinese language and literature, as
well as general survey courses focused on East Asian civilization and/or
culture.
DEPARTMENT The department of 40 full- and part-time faculty offers programs in French, German, Spanish,
Japanese, Chinese, Classics, Arabic and Russian. Faculty
teach at all levels of an undergraduate program and are expected to
undertake research and participate in service opportunities. Several department
faculty participate in such interdepartmental programs
as Canadian American Studies, Linguistics, Latin American Studies and East
Asian Studies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Ph.D. by time of appointment in
Chinese Literature, East Asian Studies, or related field with significant
emphasis in Chinese literature or culture;
▪ Native or near native Chinese and English fluency;
▪ Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching;
▪ Demonstrated ability to teach courses in Chinese Literature and East Asian
civilization or culture; and
▪ Demonstrated commitment to excellence in scholarship and a dynamic research
agenda.

Assistant Language Directors are part of a community that creates an intensive

Located on several college campuses, MMLA offers students the opportunity to
study Chinese with skilled language educators. The Assistant Language Directors
are senior administrators, working in close consultation with the Language
Director to implement and appropriately adapt the MMLA curriculum, guidelines,
and policies. With the Language Director, they lead a team of experienced
educators and Residential Advisors to create a unique immersion academic
program.
MMLA follows the traditions and success of the Middlebury College immersion
programs and the curriculum development expertise of Monterey Institute of
International Studies. All staff and students adopt the Middlebury Language
Pledge©, modified as needed for the student age group and language level, so
that a full-immersion environment is created.
The Assistant Language Director supports the Language Director with all of
their tasks and responsibilities (see Language Director Job Description).
However, during the summer, through their leadership and creativity, Assistant
Language Director primarily concentrates on ensuring the quality of the “informal
Learning” times of the day by working closely with residential life team
members to appropriately structure each activity or event. These activities
include morning assembly, afternoon activities, meals, evening assembly, and
evening RA meetings. They are also asked to plan and implement these activities
for students. The Assistant Language Director is enthusiastic and supportive,
appropriately tasking and training Residential Advisors and the Activity
Coordinators in strategies to help students stay in the Language Pledge. The
ALD is proactive, can troubleshoot and work well with others to solve problems,
with the goal of maintaining a high quality language summer program. The ALD
ensures that their language teams are following MMLA curriculum, policies and
guidelines. In smaller academies, Assistant Language Directors may have some
limited teaching responsibilities.
The Assistant Language Director is required to participate in e two on-line
moderated discussions with Academy Teachers and Residential Advisors. The ALD
is also expected to review and become familiar with MMLA curriculum, and
past-year’s evaluation results. The ALD is engaged in afternoon Activities,
evening assembly, field trips and other calendars.

Consortium (USAC) is a nonprofit consortium of 33 US universities and has been
providing study abroad opportunities since 1982. For almost 30 years, we have

The University of Arkansas invites applications for a
tenure-track position in Chinese to begin in August 2012. A PhD in Chinese
linguistics, culture, or related discipline is required. The successful
candidate should be willing to teach existing lower and upper-level Chinese
courses, especially courses related to Chinese Business, Language and Culture.
Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese and fluency in English are
required. Also, candidates should be familiar with the Chinese Pingin System, should demonstrate the ability to conduct
research related to Chinese language, history or society, and the willingness
to work with faculty towards a stronger Chinese Program.
