The Department of East Asian
Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University anticipates one or more
openings for a full-time Drill Instructor/Teaching Assistant in Chinese
beginning August 1, 2012 through July 31, 2013. Drill instructors assist course
heads in Chinese language classes, assist in preparation of teaching materials,
and teach individual drill sections. Candidates must have native or near-native
fluency in Chinese. A bachelor's degree is required; teaching experience in Chinese
at the college level is strongly desired; computer literacy is required.

Monterey Language Academy
Language Directors are part of a
community that creates an intensive four-week immersion program for middle and
high school students each summer. Located on selected college campuses, MMLA
offers students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French,
German, or Spanish with skilled language educators. The Language Director is a
senior administrator that works in close consultation with the Director of
Curriculum and Instruction, Region Manager and Summer Site Manager to implement
the MMLA curriculum, guidelines, and policies. The Language Director leads a
team of experienced educators and residential advisors to create a unique
immersion academic program. The Language Director will report to the Regional
Manager in pre-season and to the Summer Site Manager during the program.
The Language Director is responsible
for coaching his/her team of teachers pre- and during-season to implement
the MMLA Immersion Curriculum and to monitor both teacher and student
performance. He/she is proactive and is able to solve problems professionally,
with the goal of maintaining a successful summer language program. The Language
Director ensures that their language team is following all MMLA policies and
guidelines.
Pre-season areas of responsibilities

Qualifications:
A minimum of two years of world

pedagogy. Teacher training and professional development experience
strongly preferred. This is a residential position. All employees will be
provided room and board. They will have scheduled time off each day and week,
two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel

This position is interdisciplinary, with primary teaching responsibilities in
Chinese language and literature, as well as general survey courses focused on
East Asian civilization and/or culture.
DEPARTMENT The department of 40 full- and part-time faculty offers programs in French, German, Spanish,
Japanese, Chinese, Classics, Arabic and Russian. Faculty
teach at all levels of an undergraduate program and are expected to
undertake research and participate in service opportunities. Several department
faculty participate in such interdepartmental programs
as Canadian American Studies, Linguistics, Latin American Studies and East

Assistant Language Directors are part of a community that creates an intensive

Located on several college campuses, MMLA offers students the opportunity to
study Chinese with skilled language educators. The Assistant Language Directors
are senior administrators, working in close consultation with the Language
Director to implement and appropriately adapt the MMLA curriculum, guidelines,
and policies. With the Language Director, they lead a team of experienced
educators and Residential Advisors to create a unique immersion academic
program.
MMLA follows the traditions and success of the Middlebury College immersion
programs and the curriculum development expertise of Monterey Institute of
International Studies. All staff and students adopt the Middlebury Language
Pledge©, modified as needed for the student age group and language level, so
that a full-immersion environment is created.
The Assistant Language Director supports the Language Director with all of
their tasks and responsibilities (see Language Director Job Description).
However, during the summer, through their leadership and creativity, Assistant
Language Director primarily concentrates on ensuring the quality of the “informal
Learning” times of the day by working closely with residential life team
members to appropriately structure each activity or event. These activities
include morning assembly, afternoon activities, meals, evening assembly, and
evening RA meetings. They are also asked to plan and implement these activities
for students. The Assistant Language Director is enthusiastic and supportive,
appropriately tasking and training Residential Advisors and the Activity
Coordinators in strategies to help students stay in the Language Pledge. The
ALD is proactive, can troubleshoot and work well with others to solve problems,
with the goal of maintaining a high quality language summer program. The ALD
ensures that their language teams are following MMLA curriculum, policies and
guidelines. In smaller academies, Assistant Language Directors may have some
limited teaching responsibilities.
The Assistant Language Director is required to participate in e two on-line
moderated discussions with Academy Teachers and Residential Advisors. The ALD
is also expected to review and become familiar with MMLA curriculum, and
past-year’s evaluation results. The ALD is engaged in afternoon Activities,
evening assembly, field trips and other calendars.

The Department of East Asian Studies
in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for a
full-time Faculty Lecturer position in Chinese language teaching. This is a
renewable five-year, twelve months per year academic appointment. Applicants
for this position should have a PhD or equivalent degree (or be close to
completion) in Chinese language pedagogy, Chinese linguistics, second language
acquisition, or related fields, and proficiency in Chinese and English. The
successful candidate will have substantial relevant teaching experience and
present clear evidence of superior teaching ability. Experience in program
coordination and computer-assisted instruction will be assets. Faculty
Lecturers will teach eight half course equivalents (HCE) per year and assume
normal administrative duties associated with teaching. There is no research
expectation associated with this position, although Faculty Lecturers are
expected to remain current with the relevant literature in their fields as it
applies to their teaching assignments.
Courses on East Asia have been
offered regularly at the University of Alberta since 1961, making our program
one of the oldest in Western Canada. Originally founded in 1981, the Department

Instructor of Chinese: Tecnologico de Monterrey
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico
The Sinaloa branch of the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey
(ITESM) is currently seeking a qualified teacher of Mandarin for a full-time
position. Located in Culiacan, Mexico, Campus Sinaloa forms part of a 33-campus
system of high school and university programs. Along with these programs,
Campus Sinaloa also offers a language center open to the public. The campus
currently has some 1,100 students.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS. Successful applicants for
the position will be certified to teach Mandarin. An ability to teach English
as well is a plus but is not a requirement. An ability to work collaboratively
is a must.
JOB REQUIREMENTS. Full-time teachers at ITESM are
expected to work 40 hours a week. Twenty contact hours, student counseling,
lesson-planning, and grading form a large part of the standard work week.
Additionally, teachers may be asked to contribute to ongoing projects in
materials and curriculum design and to participate in occasional departmental
meetings and meetings of the faculty as a whole. Contact hours will be divided
between the high school and the language center. As high school classes are in
the morning and language center classes in the evening, teachers will be
required to work a split shift. Teachers are also expected to teach Saturday
morning classes.
BENEFITS/REMUNERATION.
Salary is based on the following criteria:
*Teaching qualification, less than one year’s experience: 16,000 pesos per
month (gross)
*Teaching qualification, 1-2 years’ experience: 18,000 pesos per month (gross)
*Teaching qualification, more than two years’ experience: 20,000 pesos per
month (gross)

The Department of Modern Languages and
Literatures at the University of Central Florida is seeking to hire an
instructor to teach Mandarin Chinese. Position is expected to begin August 2012
Minimum requirements: M.A. in Chinese (Mandarin) from an accredited institution
at time of hire; Fluency or near native fluency in Chinese and high level of

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching intensive first
–year through advanced Chinese language courses (equivalent to a 5/5 load),
active programmatic involvement, and close collaboration with the Chinese
Flagship Program team, with faculty in the Department of Modern Languages, and
with faculty in related disciplines. The individual hired will promote the
study of Chinese and help build a rigorous and a rigorous and cohesive
proficiency-based Chinese language and culture program.
